Subversive Advertising

Lesson: 22-09-2015

In this part of the lesson we looked at subversive advertising. We were shown some already-existing subversive advertisements and learned that they are adverts that show the bad side of the product being advertised.

We were then tasked with looking on Shop Ethical to look for "Companies to Avoid". Then, we were asked to create an original subversive advert of our own. For my sub-advert, I chose Kellogg's "Frosted Flakes". I chose this company and product because it's very likely that children eat it quite often when it isn't safe for them. Through my research, I found that they used GE (Genetically Engineered) sugar, which is what I chose to base my sub-advert on.

The above are the sketch of my sub-advert (left) and the outcome when I tried to recreate this sketch into Photoshop (right). In order to keep the shape the same as the product's packaging, I made use of the rectangle shape tool and in order to get the arch near the top I used the 'add anchor point' tool. I tried to find fonts that matched that of the fonts used on the actual packaging. In order to make the backing on the brand name, I duplicated the layer, changed the colour and then moved the original layer a few pixels over to the right. For the product name, I used the 'blending options' and selected 'outer glow'. From there, I put these as my settings.

Then, for the black outline, I duplicated that layer, changed the colour to black and upped the 'spread' to 85% and the 'size' to 100px.

Then, for the pictures on the design, I cut them out from the original packaging using the pen tool to do so.

Doing all of that gave me my final product.
